Our body regulates our sleep-wake cycle following a very complex choreography of molecules being released in our body throughout the day.
Without getting too technical, though, we can highlight a very simple part of the process:
- When our eyes perceive that natural light starts going down, it begins to release melatonin, which induces sleep.
- During the night, melatonin levels drop as we sleep and, when natural light hits our eyes (even if we're sleep) our body releases cortisol, which wakes us up.
So, what happens when...
- You are living under constant stress, and your cortisol levels are high 24x7.
- You spend a lot of time indoors, and your body cannot distinguish day and night as easily as in nature.
- Even worse, if you work late in the evening or at night with electronic devices that emit blue light that "tricks" our brain into believing it's still daytime.
